Venture life cycle describes the different stages that a venture goes through, beginning from its inception and ending with its maturity. Venture life cycle can be categorized into the following stages:
- Development stage: The first stage in the life cycle of a venture, is the development stage, it involves the conversion of an idea into a business venture. In this stage, a product prototype is developed to examine the feasibility and reliability of the product, and thereby this stage can be termed as the creating and testing stage. In the development stage no revenue is generated from the venture. And it generally lasts between six months to one year, prior to the market entry of the venture.
- Startup stage: The second stage in the life cycle of a venture is the startup stage. During this stage, the initial operational processes are laid down. The developed product is launched into the market in this stage. Ventures earn a minimalistic revenue during this stage and do not earn any profits. The startup stage lasts between six months to one year.
- Survival stage: The third stage in the life cycle of a venture is the survival stage. During this stage, the venture continues to progress in its sales and generates revenue to meet the business needs.
The survival stage generally lasts between six to eighteen months, which may differ from venture to venture. - Rapid-growth stage: The fourth stage in the life cycle of a venture is the rapid growth stage. During this stage, the value of the venture increases manifold, as the revenues expand more than expenses. Ventures that survive the third stage get to experience the benefits of the fourth stage. In the life of a venture, it experiences rapid growth for around four to five years based on the product initially introduced.
- Early-maturity stage: The fifth stage in the life cycle of a venture is the early maturity stage. During this stage, the venture experiences a slowdown in sales growth. A business venture experiences an early-maturity stage after five to six years with the same product offering.
